JUST A LITTLE ZHUZH… OR SO WE THOUGHT

It started with a passing comment—my client’s modelesque, impossibly chic mom leaned in and said, “I’d love your help, but I’m sure you don’t just do pillows, do you?”

Now, normally my work covers a bit more ground, but something about her—her sharp Texas charm, her sparkle, the twinkle in her eye that hinted at a thousand stories—I couldn’t resist. I smiled and said, “Absolutely. Let’s zhuzh your place with some new pillows.”

Here’s the thing: pillows aren’t just fluff. They’re like couture accessories for a room—small, yes, but rich with thoughtful detail, full of texture, and a total tell on someone’s taste. Designing them well takes more thought than most people think. Like a box of handmade truffles, they’re tiny, delightful, and deceptively complex.

And—surprise, surprise—the project grew. A little zhuzh turned into something more layered, more personal, and a whole lot more fun. Her stories of boarding school in Manhattan, the Carlyle’s Bemelmans Bar and more poured out over our wine-times: warm, vivid, and served-up with her spirited Texan drawl.

As a creative, it’s the journey I fall for. The unexpected turns. The stories tucked between the seams. And this one? Well, it started with a pillow and turned into a memory.
